Avenue’s Best Neighbourhoods

Everyone had a great time at the Acadia Community Winter Carnival yesterday!  It’s one of the community events that’s led Acadia being named 4th best neighbourhood by Avenue Magazine Survey in 2016.  The year before, Avenue’s Best Neighbourhoods Survey put us in the third spot!

Avenue’s Best Neighbourhoods

I encourage you to take 5 minutes to take their survey.  Do it now, there’s only a few more days to share your thoughts on your awesome community!

Remember all the great things your community has to offer when filling out the survey.  Acadia is well situated in the city with easy access to downtown and onto many arterial road choices if you’re exploring outside the community.  We boast green space, many school choices, diverse places of worship.  With the Acadia Recreation Complex, Acadia Aquatic & Fitness Centre & Osten & Victor Alberta Tennis Centre, we’re a hub for active living! Our active Community Association is often recognized for it’s engagement.  Our community offers a number of housing choices, which attracts all the benefits of having people from all ages, wages and stages of life sharing a space.

Cross country skiing close to Acadia

Winter can be a time when we cocoon at home.  Perhaps we dust off an old indoor hobby like knitting or woodworking, or just catch up on some Netflix series.  But it’s also a good idea to get outside for some fresh are to combat that cabin fever.  Also, if being more active, or losing some excess weight was a New Year Resolution of yours, then your indoor hobby just might not cut it.

Last weekend, my wife and I went cross country skiing.  It’s closer than you think, and likely cheaper than you think!  We headed to our Neighbourhood to the west, Haysboro, for skis.  Rapid Rent has cross country ski packages priced at $20 for adults, and just $15 for kids.  That includes skis, boots & poles.  If you rent them on a Friday night, they aren’t due back until Sunday at noon.

After loading up the SUV, we headed down to our neighbours to the south, Maple Ridge.  Maple Ridge golf course is a city owned course.  In the winter there are about 5km of groomed cross country ski trails (by Foothills Nordic volunteers).  The best part is the entry fee: FREE!

We had a wonderful time on the skis!  It’s easy to forgot that you’re in the middle of a city of over a million people.  We’ll definitely be out again to enjoy this gem that’s so close to Acadia.

Homebrewing: Making wine and beer at home

Homebrewing: Making wine and beer at home

If you are curious about homebrewing, and maybe overwhelmed or intimidated by the equipment or setup, please come to my beginner’s “Where’s The Skills?” session.  I will have my equipment there and will walk thru the processes of making wine from kits, making cider from the apples from my tree, and making beer from grain.

I will have samples of my homemade wine, cider and beer.

Please RSVP so I have an idea of how many people to expect.
